Monheim am Rhein, Germany, March 2, 2023 – Industrial waste heat generated by OQ Chemicals is already reliably contributing to an efficient and low-carbon district heating in Oberhausen, Germany. The local energy provider Energieversorgung Oberhausen (evo) and OQ Chemicals will further collaborate to increase the efficiency of the evo district heating network. To this end, additional heat sources for this heating network will be developed at the OQ Chemicals site in Oberhausen-Holten. OQ Chemicals and evo want to identify and use additional energy potential more efficiently by investing in digitization and new technologies such as heat pumps. Currently, OQ Chemicals supplies evo with around 80 GWh of thermal energy annually, about 20 percent of evo’s total heat demand. This amount supplies about 11,000 households with heat and saves about 19,000 tons of CO₂ emissions per year.
“At OQ Chemicals, we are always looking for ways to use energy as efficiently as possible. With our ‘reduce’ initiative, we aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions sustainably and strive for climate neutrality. We are pleased to have evo as a partner to support us in achieving these goals, as industrial waste heat can contribute significantly to a more efficient and climate-friendly district heating supply,” says OQ Chemicals site manager, Dr. Horst Hanke.
“Buildings heated with non-renewable energy contribute to a large share of CO₂ emissions. In such cases, district heating can be a progressively climate-neutral option when the energy comes from reliable renewable sources, such as industrial waste heat from OQ Chemicals. Through further digitization, the operation and control of district heating can be intelligently designed, and renewable heat sources such as large heat pumps from industrial plants can be integrated into the network,” said Christian Basler, Technical Director of evo.
As a global market leader, OQ Chemicals produces specialty chemicals in Oberhausen for high-quality coatings or high-performance lubricants. Generating a lot of industrial heat in the process, the company can only partially feed this waste heat back into the production cycle. Since 1985, OQ Chemicals has been successfully supplying most of it to the evo district heating network, leading to a continuous expansion and development of the cooperation between the two companies.
