Materiality Analysis

The materiality analysis (together with the SDGs) forms the basis for our sustainability strategy, concepts and activities – thereby shaping the sustainable success of OQ Chemicals.

Environmental targets – shaping the future

Global climate change and its consequences are one of the greatest challenges of our time.

At the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Paris in 2015, the targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions were agreed upon with a view to limiting global warming to well below 2°C, even as far as 1.5°C if possible. In order to achieve this target, Germany agreed with the other European states – as part of the ‘European Green Deal’ – to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Europe by at least 40 percent by 2030 compared to 1990.

Based on this ‘European Green Deal’, OQ Chemicals has set itself ambitious targets and initiated a large-scale global project for reducing energy consumption and related CO2 emissions.

Energy

OQ Chemicals aims to reduce its energy consumption globally by 10 percent by 2025 by increasing its energy efficiency and/or reducing its absolute consumption where applicable (base year: 2017).

Emissions

OQ Chemicals aims to reduce its absolute CO2 emissions globally by 6 percent by the end of 2020, by 18 percent by the end of 2025 and by 30 percent by the end of year 2030 (base year: 2017).

OQ Chemicals also plans to reduce its product-specific CO2 emissions by 10 percent by the end of 2020, by 25 percent by the end of 2025 and by 40 percent by the end of year 2030 (base year: 2017).

OQ Chemicals has set itself the target of avoiding – or at least minimizing and reusing – waste wherever possible.

Targets for reducing and avoiding waste

OQ Chemicals aims to reduce waste globally by transferring 5 percent of waste (in metric tons – base year: 2017) into a higher ‘waste category’* by 2025.

*Waste categories: 1. Avoidance 2. Reusage 3. Recycling/Energy Recovery 4. Disposal
